It is currently unclear whether Black Myth: Wukong will offer such variety, as Sun Wukong's staff appears to be the key element of the player's offensive arsenal. If the staff is the only weapon available, then ensuring it is regularly enhanced and upgraded with new moves and abilities will be vital in order to keep combat feeling fresh through


Sun Wukong’s staff is his main offensive weapon, capable of flashy combos with a press of the light attack button. Holding the heavy attack button can charge up a stronger attack that, in its basic form, has Wukong slamming the staff down on an enemy. As players mix up their combos and charged attacks, they will fill up a focus meter and eventually earn a focus point. These points can be spent on an even more damaging attack that can be timed at the end of a combo as a pseudo-finis


I walked away from Gamescom 2023 having played a ton of great upcoming games, from triple-A juggernauts like Mortal Kombat 1 and Sonic Superstars , to smaller but no less awesome releases like Thank Goodness You’re Here and AK-xolotl. As happy as I was with all I got to see, there was one game that managed to evade my grasp entirely - the Journey to the West-inspired Soulslike, Black Myth: Wuko


Black Myth: Wukong initially seemed too good to be true. Its beautiful graphics, fluid animations, and fast-paced gameplay were so impressive that a groundswell formed on social media, and the title jumped to the top of many gamers’ most anticipated lists. Of course, those thoughts of the game being just a tech demo lingered, but over time, developer Game Science showed more of Black Myth: Wukong and it became clear the title was very real. Now, having played the game for a few hours, I’m happy to report that, based on this first hands-on, Black Myth: Wukong is one to watch out


So, while there may not be builds in the traditional sense, players can approach Black Myth: Wukong in different ways based on their spell and Transformation choice. They can also take things a step further by spending skill points on different staff forms (switched using the d-pad) that have their own attack patterns. For the preview, we unlocked the Tower Form , which has a nifty move where Sun Wukong climbs to the top of his staff and stands out of harm’s way before doing a flashy flip and slam move. It seems likely that most players will unlock all of the skills by the game’s end, but those different staff forms seem to do enough to mix up combat and allow for unique approaches to varied enem


I haven’t played Elden Ring, but I played two hours of Wukong earlier this month, and these long combos look very familiar. I took on four bosses during the preview and every one of them came at me with the same long strings of attacks that were difficult to read and almost impossible to dodge. Dodging early or late was almost certain death as the attacks just kept coming, and even when I managed to avoid the entire barrage, the opening to retaliate was much smaller than I would have liked. The game looks to fuse Chinese mythology with traditional Soulslike mechanics in order to provide gamers with an exciting experience. The Monkey King has been shown to be a highly capable and acrobatic protagonist who wields a staff to devastating effect. Imagine my surprise the next day when, while blearily stumbling around the show floor and scoping out what was there before the big crowds could put me off ever venturing past the press area, I saw that Black Myth: Wukong was not only playable at Gamescom, but had one of the biggest booths of the whole show, towering above the likes of Mortal Kombat 1 and Payda


Since it was unveiled in 2020, the upcoming Black Myth: Wukong has fans of action-RPGs excited. From its impressive visual presentation to fast-paced, free-flowing combat, the game is shaping up to be one of the finest in the soulslike genre.
