Dune: Awakening 's sandworms devour and destroy everything, while standard deaths in conventional combat lead to minor losses. It not only helps realize the dangers of Arrakis, but ensures players are mindful of what they are carrying where. The demoist showed us a couple of vehicles players could use, all derived from the Dune franchise obviously, and losing them in such a vast world is no doubt a serious loss, alongside any high-level gear. Players could craft that gear again, but it requires finding the schematic, necessary materials, and so forth. Gaining anything in Dune: Awakening is an investment, and the sandworm can just wipe that all cl

And Lynch’s strange film isn't being ignored either. "Lynch tried to grapple [with] a lot of the strange weirdness of the license, which is something which we don't want to ignore, we don't want to forget. That's part of the uniqueness of the world, and it's something we just want to keep on adding. And I keep telling the rest of the artists working on this, this is an opportunity that doesn't come around very often, to work on something this uniq

However, the Dune world isn’t just the modern films. There’s the saga of books Funcom has primarly worked from, previous Dune strategy games, and the movie directed by the late David Lynch. With so much lore, it’s been a challenge for Funcom to ensure no mistakes make their way into the game. Helpfully, "Joel [Bylos, Dune: Awakening’s Creative Director] knows everything," Whelan says. "He knows the books inside and out, so you cannot get things past him because he sits right behind me, so he will catch thin

Base building is another big part of Dune: Awakening ’s overall gameplay, with a separate building mode reminiscent of other base building games like No Man’s Sky . Players can scroll through sections like basic components such as walls and roofs, crafting machinery, and assorted furniture and see an outline of what it would look like before placement. These also come in styled sets for Houses that fans will be familiar with, offering different aesthetics, from the sleeker House Harkonnnen to a more traditional-style Atrei

The meta-human aspect of Dune (constantly swirling around the concept of spice, an enhancing/mystical drug of sorts) lends itself well to basic archetypes, without going too over the top. Early abilities are largely locomotion-based , either attempting to close the gap between opponents or pull them toward you. It's a simple mechanical callback to action games of old, but it makes combat more exciting out of the g

It’s exciting to hear that Funcom already has ideas for the future of Dune: Awakening. Working with such an established IP is exciting and limited, but Dune has plenty of variety to keep players coming back for ye

Combat is exciting when you're going toe-to-toe with someone who has a personal shield , which you need to push through with a wind-up heavy melee attack. Depending on your build, you have myriad options available: pepper them with ranged attacks to throw them off, run/rush with the aforementioned movement abilities, or throw down in an epic knife fight, parrying and dodging at the right times. NPCs don't always put up a fight, but I'm interested in fully exploring the game's PVP element (an optional zone) in the final build. There's a lot of potential here in this combat foundat

In the first five hours or so, a lot of the game is on rails, teaching you all of its facets and forcing you to put all of your knowledge together to stay alive. You'll need to salvage scraps of metal and other reagents, research blueprints, and build them yourself . It's a multistep process that can be tedious, especially for some of the more demanding crafting requireme

Beyond that variety and the hundreds of hours of content expected in the base game, I was interested to hear where Funcom sees Awakening going in the future. Conan Exiles has been active since 2017 and gets large updates to this

It’s understandable, albeit unfortunate, why the newest preview didn’t give much of the more MMO elements of the title away simply due to the location of the demo. However, what was clear from my time with the game was that Funcom has deeply leaned into the harsher aspects of Arrakis, with an emphasis on players having to build their character up from nothing . Even basic traversal is difficult at first, and it really captures the feeling of being lost and struggling in the desert post-crash. Though it’s hard, this harshness contributes to future feelings of accomplishment as w

Troopers are a dedicated gunnery class in Dune Awakening Patch Notes: Awakening that specialize in enhancing ranged weapon tactics for rifles, scatterguns, and bigger weapons such as missile launchers and lasguns, all of which can be crafted after researching the associated schematics. Trained in the Landsraad's Great Houses, which are part of Dune's deeper lore from before the Butlerian Jihad, Troopers are an effective and powerful ranged class. They have dynamic skills suited for exploration and epic battles, and make use of a starting feature called a Suspensor Belt that enables unique abilit
