LoL has come from a niche game to being one of the major competitors in eSports, with dozens of teams going head to head in tournaments, with several voices calling it a real sport or even trying to get it into the Olympics. Besides the tournaments and events held outside of your house, the ranked community of LoL is huge, paving the way for newer games like Overwatch . Getting your foot into that community can be hard however, from other players expecting a certain degree of skill from you or s...

Ironically, in this vein, the things I like most about Legend of Solgard are the things that would dissuade more casual players from continuing throughout the game. The game's RPG-inspired progression system in-tandem with its role-playing turn-based strategy elements breath longevity into each facet of the game. In this regard, tried and true mid-core gamers will feel right at home. For every middle-aged Bubble Witch Saga player that Legend of Solgard may lose due its various mechanics, it will...

Sometimes the changes are bigger. League of Legends regularly reworks and retools its champions. Some reworks are only visual updates, while others are huge overhauls to the champion's kit. However, Riot's reworking team is always aiming to focus a champion into its niche with every update an improvement on an outdated champ I looked back at the screen. 1-1. What is this?! How did they score? Why? What on Earth is going on?! Half-time came, and I was invited to rearrange my team. I didn’t know w...

Once again, _ HotS _ doesn’t have this problem due to the shared experience. There are certainly heroes that have a more potent role early on, or are more effective in the late game, but the role of the damage dealer is no more or less important than any other role on the team. Likewise, this helps to keep egos more in check in the Blizzard M Last month, word broke that Microsoft had canceled a reboot of Phantom Dust , which was being developed by Darkside Games. The reboot was meant to revive t...

Laval continued to show their dominance in the third game securing the win and a spot in the Grand Finals. Again, UK showed some promise at the Tomb of the Spider Queen in the very beginning of the match but quickly changed once Laval gained momentum and UK missed way too many opportunities to really take the match. Too many times did someone on UK land a great ult, but had nothing to follow through w It's no secret that Mists of Pandaria is not the most beloved World of Warcraft expansion. Many...

Distributors clearly have a lot to gain from online multiplayer games, especially with the popularity of microtransactions and the increasing popularity of DLC—more maps, more costumes, and more weapons often tempt gamers into paying more. This works well for free-to-play games like League of Legends or other MOBAs, but announcing DLC before a game's release often draws criticism. Many players argue that paid DLC encourages some developers to omit necessary or desired player content for higher p...

When games made the leap from public arcades to private homes, multiplayer continued to be a prominent feature. In 1987, MIDI Maze for the Atari ST allowed players to play together with up to 16 people. Many NES games also incorporated multiplayer—the original Super Mario Bros . allowed players to swap between Mario and Luigi, and Ice Climber allowed simultaneous co-op.Technology advancements allowed the inclusion of split-screen modes for racing games and shooters. It didn't stop there. As game...

That being said, in its own unique way, Legend of Solgard' s mid-core style of game design is considerably more palatable than other mobile games. The gameplay loop is repeatedly made satisfying by its own rich complexity; the kind of casual challenge that could only come from a mobile title. The more I play Legend of Solgard and ponder the strengths and weakness of my characters, the different varieties of enemies, and different combinations I have at my disposal, the more I get sucked into it....

On an Earth with fewer and fewer old school role-playing games, Citizens of Earth brought back the genre, at least for me. Comparing many of these games to Earthbound is pretty standard and Citizens of Earth compares pretty well. The storyline, cast of characters and writing are all hilarious. Every situation you find yourself in is not only fun but the companions you encounter add to the game’s whacky antics. Attacks and art style also come with a cheesy nature. It’s an all-around fun game to p...
