People living in the Southeast states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi are the most likely to get dementia with a 25 percent increased risk compared to the rest of the country.  A terrifying new map from researchers in California compared the dementia rates of 10 regions across the country, with Mid-Atlantic states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey and West Virginia having the lowest overall rates. They were used as a baseline comparison for the rest of the country. Behind the Southeast, the regions with the second highest rates of dementia were northwest states like Alaska and Idaho and around the Rocky Mountain states like Colorado and Montana, which were at a 23 per cent increased risk.  Southwestern states like California were 13 percent more likely to develop the condition, while those in northeast states like New York were the least likely with a seven percent increased risk. The researchers, from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), said the disparities are most likely due to socioeconomic factors like quality of education and exposure to environmental toxins.  They said while more research is needed, the findings show which areas of the country are most vulnerable to dementia and where efforts should be targeted for education, prevention and therapies. Some TBIs may also increase amounts of tau and amyloid proteins in the brain, which are known to cause Alzheimer's disease.  Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is also most common in veterans.
