Arizona State took home top notch gaming systems for their runner-up finish. Heroes of the Storm may still be in beta until June, but its appearance on national television last night got the eSports scene some of the best mainstream exposure its had One important logistic is the potential for archive lockout, with Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow nearing the ends of their fourth, second and first seasons respectively. This isn’t the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where you can skip a movie and all you’ll miss is an ambiguous post-credits scene or occasional plot point. A season of Arrow is 22 episodes long, and there are four of them. That’s over sixty hours of television, just for one ongoing series. Remember Tommy Merlyn? Just about? How about Isobel Rochev? There are no doubt some fanatics who have memorized her entire wiki page, but the same can’t be said for the poor sap who starts watching a Justice League series and is lost in a sea of references and confusing cameos. The series would need to be streamlined and fresh, and if that means jettisoning a lot of history (or just not bringing it up all that often), then that’s what needs to hap As you continue to play matches, grow closer in your group and level up, you will notice that certain champions do better against you or you often are on the losing end of trades. This can come down to the opponents skill, but it can also mean their champion counters yours, either by having higher defence to nullify your attack or outputting abilities that make your own pointl In truth, both the League of Legends and Dota 2 communities are their own complaint-filled circles of Hell. But, Dota 2 is just a little bit higher up. This is surprising, since Dota 2 's voice feature allows mentally unstable children to scream in your ear. League of Legends players need to use 3rd-party chat programs/sites in order to hear each other complain in different languages. Otherwise, they stop to type whenever they are irked (which is oft Now, a little bit of context: I was playing Championship Manager 70s Legends in my local library. In a place where one can appreciate true peace-and-quiet, it was a perfect environment to play the game. After all, iPhones are supposed to be taken with you, wherever you go -- it is a mobile phone, after all -- and so when I finally had a few minutes to myself, I thought I'd take on Leeds' first ma It was mentioned at the top of this column that Heroes of the Storm got some major attention on national television on Sunday. Blizzard's Heroes of the Dorm competition had its grand finals, with the winners getting tuition money for the duration of their college care Which is why I was unsure about reviewing Championship Manager 70s Legends for the iPhone. Its connection to soccer made it an unhappy prospect, and I went in with low expectations, praying I would complete it quickly, and move on with my l Blizzard dropped the ban hammer this past week on four different players for "win trading," including two well-known professional players. All four players are now disqualified from the World Championship, and the two pros have apparently had their entire Hearthstone account shutdown as w The two (former) professionals are Olzhas "Naiman" Batyrbekov and Dan "Alchemixt" Walton. The two lesser known players were only identified by their gamertags, XzaM and Damnery. While Blizzard has banned players for offenses like botting and win trading in the past, this is the first time they have publicly named the players. It seems like they're stepping up their efforts to clean up the professional scene as Blizzcon gets clo As League champions are remade, and the Summoner's Rift map is completely refurbished, the game is moving away from the cartoon-like aesthetic of its earlier years. The game is also becoming more dynamic, as it adds in a wider array of items with kit-changing abilities. But... many of these changes go in the same direction that Dota 2 already had, despite League having a headstart. It's important to remember that Dota 2 ended its open beta in 2013, four years after League did. This makes it all the more shocking that Dota 2 had features like its practice mode long before Leag The aforementioned Justice League two-parter is pretty much set in stone, even if its tone may change to suit what audiences seem to be after. Heroes are called forth in the eternal war between the Dire and the Radiant. The game fills each hero with vocal cues to further expand their character. A player can witness Rylai's crush on Sven in-game if they are allied together. Dota 2 would bring comics to the fray. Not only is your own skill a contributing factor, but your items, runes, and masteries are also valuable things to keep in mind. Splatoon is my choice for best game of 2015. 2K's multiplayer online-only Evolve is under fire for this very reason. The game already has several DLCs and a deluxe edition available on top of its $60 price tag. Some critics claim this is equivalent to Evolve being a free-to-play game with microtransactions. Others, who support Evolve 's unique 4v1 approach to multiplayer and gorgeous graphics, hope that paying more money upfront will benefit and support future work. Adding more opportunities for players to pay more for games—through DLC and custom items—is a strategy that has earned developers more money thus far, so it's unlikely to end anytime s A favorite to win this year's Phase 2 Western Clash, HeroesHearth Esports has been dominant this season as one of two undefeated teams. Additionally, they have only lost three of the 21 games they've played so far. The team has really made a name for themselves, even though they were drafted from the Open Division just last y Fading demand for local multiplayer. Perhaps most important in the disappearance of local multiplayer is decreased demand. Players want better graphics, and better graphics means cutting split-screens. Since online multiplayer games sell better than solely single-player experiences, developers include them—even when they are essentially clones of other popular series. Online multiplayer games are always available (provided your internet or the server isn't down), there are always people waiting to play, and they don’t require graphical sacrifices. Online multiplayer games also constitute more of a challenge—while your friends' talents might be all over the place, online ranked matches mean you can almost always find somebody at your skill le We also received confirmation this week from NetherRealm Studios that long-time Mortal Kombat veteral Liu Kang will be joining the Mortal Kombat X roster. With just a few weeks left until release, the Mortal Kombat developer is releasing information at a rapid rate, so we're sure to see even more reveals and rumors hit the streets s More revenue. Another, less benign, reason for this shift to online multiplayer is money. Many distributors cite piracy as a major cause of declining profits , and increased DRM restrictions make sharing games with friends much more difficult. Decreasing the amount of local multiplayer means that friends who want to play together need their own copies of the game, their own system, and their own subscription. The result is increased costs for gamers and increased revenue for distributAnother strategy game I played on my list is SteamWorld Heist and it’s a winner for me. Understanding the gameplay is simple and the story jumped right into the action. Exploring randomly generated ships and shooting it out with robots makes every stop along the way a true challenge. The old west aesthetic and steam-powered environment in SteamWorld Heist is pulled off much better than Wild Wild West. It’s almost the complete opposite of SteamWorld Dig but you could say SteamWorld Heist is a more grown-up version in the series. It’s a game to both kill time and robots with. The HGC Western Clash is a bracketed double-elimination tournament. This allows teams that lose in the first round a second chance; this also means that there are two brackets. When a team gets eliminated from the upper bracket, they are sent down to the lower bracket. If a team loses in the lower bracket, they are eliminated. However, the team that makes its way through the lower bracket will see themselves at the Grand Fi "I think it’s something that I’ve always been interested in, but it wasn’t until I got into college and met some people doing it that I actually took the plunge. It’s a clever move on their part and one that I felt drew fans of yesteryear back to the good fight.
