Even if both the Battlefield and Need for Speed franchises are primed for a comeback during this new console generation, Battlefield already has the advantage. Unlike EA's iconic racing series, Battlefield 's had a minor misstep in an otherwise very successful tenure as EA's flagship first-person shooter. Battlefield 5 is only a relatively recent failure in the wake of successful entries like Battlefield 1 , Battlefield 4 , Battlefield 3 , and even Bad Company 2 . Battlefield 's redemption arc, so to speak, isn't a long time coming. Battlefield 5 was relatively slow on the uptake when it came to balance changes and post-launch content, something the next game presumably won't rep While Activision continues to see renewed success with the Call of Duty franchise, EA continues to lag behind. As the latest Black Ops Cold War and the ever-expanding Warzone carry the franchise's momentum into 2021, EA's Battlefield franchise finds itself in a troubling position for a return. Battlefield 5 left the shooter series, often seen as Call of Duty 's rival, in a bad place by the time official support for the fifth game had ended last year. Granted the ending of developer support was to divert attention to the new Battlefield game coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X, which needs to make a serious comeback in order to reach the franchise's previous hei While DICE’s recent attempt at covering World War 2 was controversial, as Battlefield 5 failed to find the same level of success as other games in the company’s flagship series, 2016’s Battlefield 1 proved that the series could work in more unique time periods . With a war largely untouched by the medium of video games, DICE was able to let their creativity shine, and the result was an excellent entry in the Battlefield series that still holds up years after rele Time can only provide that perspective to Need for Speed . Gameplay-wise, the series has been all over the place, with each release between Need for Speed: The Run and Need for Speed Heat making significant changes to handling, sense of speed, and other pivotal gameplay aspects. Mechanics in the last four or five Need for Speed games have basically been a testing ground for different gameplay styles, rather than a consistently improved driving model. Paired with narratives wildly differentiating from uninteresting to excruciatingly irrelevant, Need for Speed as a franchise has been anything but consistent in design, as well as critical/commercial recept Last year, during November’s earnings call, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson revealed a tiny bit of promising information regarding Battlefield 6 . According to his words, the game was going to be the biggest one to ever release in the franchise, offering a never-before-seen scale. Although Wilson didn’t specifically elaborate on what this meant gameplay-wise, one would imagine that massive battle encounters await players in the anticipated sequel. It was indirectly confirmed by insiders who claimed that Battlefield 6 might feature 128-player batt Much of this depends on when Battlefield is initially announced. There's virtually no information on if and when a Battlefield 6 or new Battlefield game will be announced this year, despite being initially planned to release in EA's 2022's fiscal year, which means any time after March 31, 2021. Based on prior releases, the next entry will likely be a fall/winter release, but the reveal itself is a bit up in the air. Most would expect anywhere in the April/May 2021 range, but without a focal point like E3, marketing timelines for games are a bit more ambiguous now. However, one thing is clear: the next Battlefield is a serious mountain to climb if it's going to rival Call of Du Battlefield 5 is only a couple years old, but lots of fans are ready for Battlefield 6 this year. What's more, EA and DICE seem ready to take another crack at the franchise. Battlefield 5 had been going strong with DLCs for a couple of years, but the developers say that the game wasn't as successful upfront as they hoped. DICE had done well supporting the game in the meantime, so there's a fan base ready to carry over into Battlefield 6 . Details on the next game are supposedly coming up this spring, so fans have time to speculate on what DICE is going to take or leave from the last g Boasting good destruction mechanics, great visuals for its time, and clever map design that has yet to be matched by newer Battlefield games, Battlefield 3 delivers on all fronts. With a fair number of people still playing to this day, DICE clearly did something right with Battlefield 3 , and players can only hope that the next game in the series evokes the same feelings in its fans.
