(eyes widen and laughs) I was a big fan of The Sims and also did terrible things to them. (We go off on a tangent discussing the terrible atrocities we committed on our Sims, none of which is fit to print here)If you’re a gamer and you haven’t read Reality Is Broken by Jane McGonigal (you might have seen her on The Colbert Report ), head on over to Amazon and check it out. It’s a fascinating look into how video games are making the world a better place, but also how we look at games overall. In ...

If you followed Gamescon this year, you'll have no doubt noticed that the word on the lips of every Microsoft,Sony, and Nintendo representative was "indie." Whether it be Sony revealing that Minecraft, Rogue Legacy, and The Binding of Issac would be part of the PS4 family, Microsoft unveiling a pretty daring new system to encourage indie development, or Nintendo showing that indie developers are fully prepared to make use of the unique capabilities of the Wii U, it became clear that both compani...

This indie title is a roguelike game that features procedurally generated dungeon levels by using map seeds, which can also be shared with other players so they can attempt the same dungeon layout. The game offers single-player and multiplayer and also has permadeath that can pose a challenge for many playThe real issue with Nintendo that the lack of a Wii U version of Minecraft best summarizes, though, is their general stubbornness and seeming inability to provide the most obvious things that t...

A big problem with this is spending hours sorting through the items to prevent losing any important ite Castles are always a safe choice for Minecraft players since they'll often end up looking impressive and fantastical no matter the location or setting. Those who enjoyed being thrown straight in at the deep end in Don't Starve Together will likely have a lot of fun with Raft . They'll begin their playthrough with nothing but a single scrap of wood, but will eventually find the materials and resources needed to expand that lonely plank into the game's titular raft. Well, they will if they can survive for long enough to find what they need, anyThe episode doesn't stop there, because once you've returned from either of those two paths, you head of...

It wasn't meant to last though, as even though the 32/64 bit era only barely blurred the party lines, with every subsequent gaming generation, it became harder and harder to separate one system from another just by looking at the games on the store shelves. By the time that Peter Moore revealed a "GTA IV" tattoo on his arm at E3, the message was clear that Triple A titles had become too big and too expensive to only commit to one system or another and, outside of some in-house and privately publ...

Now Minecraft has no overarching objective, so it instantly challenges McGonigal’s claim that a goal is required in a game. But actually, Minecraft ’s main goal is composed of multiple smaller goals. It doesn’t have a "grand" objective, but it has smaller objectives, little bite-size incentives that replace each other over time and take the role of a larger objective. First you collect resources, then you build a house, then you survive the night, then you wake up and continue, but each with ste...

Infamously garnering widespread criticism at launch, No Man's Sky 's redemption story is nothing short of remarkable . Hello Games deserves all the praise in the world for sticking by its project and releasing years' worth of substantia...

[N. Fujimoto] Dragon Quest Builders is an open world sandbox game where item and town construction is a major component so that similarity to Minecraft does exist. Beyond that it is a story driven adventure game with many RPG elements, so even though there is some common ground, it is a very different game. They're unwilling to go out of their way to adapt major third party releases. They are painfully slow to adopt an indie market that could actually make good use of the Wii U's unique capabilit...

Even better, indie games can afford to lose. They are often low cost, low maintenance, high concept works that don't rely on reaching a certain figure to be considered viable, and as such they can throw caution to the wind and take some big risks while still making a profit off of even the most modest sales. That means they can also afford to remain loyal to a system like an undertaker with a debt to the don, as while they might want the money that can come with being a multi-platform release, w...

You can't directly damage them with weapon attacks but you can use traps to get rid of somebody. They don't actually die, but if an NPC is reduced to zero hit points they fall unconscious. They do gradually heal over time and eventually they will regain consciousness. You can heal them to recover hit points more quickly, or you can take their unconscious body and drop them off in some far away desolate location. While there are those who will gravitate towards single player or competitive games, ...

Palworld should not work anywhere near as well as it does. Combining multiple genres and concepts, the game should buckle under the weight of its ambition; yet, nearly everything clicks to create an experience quite unlike anything else on the market. Both Minecraft and Palworld demonstrate that the sky is the limit for the indie market. Even though it is still too early to guarantee its longevity, there is nothing to suggest that Palworld will not remain a fixture of the gaming landscape for ye...
