When NieR: Automata was first announced , fans of the original game were excited to hear that the title was making an unexpected return thanks to Platinum Games. In order to see the difference, we captured a few screenshots of the same situations within the demo both on a PS4 Pro and on a standard PS4 console, matching camera angles as well as possible and saving the shots in lossless PNG to achieve the best possible comparison.

I made this concept art of an abandoned city by painting over a screenshot of the area as it looked in the unfinished game. Environmental concept art like this serves as a solid guideline for the team that makes all the environmental models. I originally painted this cityscape with much darker colors – though the weather was always pretty nice! In the end, I decided that it didn’t match the overall feeling of NieR: Automata very well, so I brightened it up to what you see here.

NieR: Automata  will release in Japan for PS4 on February 23rd, in North America on March 7th, and in Europe on March 10th, 2017. The moment you manage to place your ship in a position that allows you to bring down a full broadside on an enemy while preventing them to shoot at the same time (a traditional maneuver that seamen call "crossing the T"), you'll feel like a god. On the other hand, Square Enix mentioned better lighting and shadows definition for PS4 Pro, but from what we can see in the comparison screenshots above, and playing the demo, those improvements might not yet be implemented in the demo. That's quite understandable, considering that we're still about two months from release.
NieR was a charming game, but NieR: Automata seems to have the potential to surpass it in basically every aspect. With PlatinumGames providing its trademark stylish action, Akihiko Yoshida bringing his beautiful character design, Keiichi Okabe's music and the visionary direction of Yoko Taro, the pieces are really starting to fall in place.
In all our previous projects, we sound designers made individual settings for echoes to fit the exact shape of each area in the game. However, since NieR: Automata takes place in a more open world, it would take a massive amount of work to do it that way. We’re aiming to cut down on all that effort while creating a realistic soundscape for the game by using a system that can manage echoes on the fly.
That description is consistent with the development narrative that has been told by Platinum Games, with the studio often emphasizing in press releases that it wants NieR: Automata to redeem the original game's failures. The demo, which is available for free, features action combat that is more akin to Bayonetta than a traditional action-RPG, and the early response from those who have gotten their hands on the demo is a positive one.
