I grew up amongst furniture, and I’ve never left it. Around these West End streets, folk are not merely choosing somewhere to park themselves. Young men with new flats, and space-saving seating options they’re looking for furniture that will outlast them. A battered old wingback, carries the room. I sent a set of accent chairs to a Grosvenor Square apartment, and it carried his family through generations. This is why old beats new. People wander past the big chains, but they find themselves in Mayfair again. Cheap wood snaps, whereas old chairs carry life. Furniture mirrors the postcode. Chelsea wants polish, with velvet chairs. Brixton is bold, with upcycled seats. That’s the charm. End of the day, accent chairs outlive their buyers. Mass production never delivers it. I still knock on the wood for weight, and the truth tells itself. Old furniture lives. Next time you flick through a catalogue, take a breath. Pick up a retro armchair, and let it settle into your life.
