Capcom took a similar approach in 2010 with Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, although that was turned from a demo into a 10 dollar downloadable title. Set in a small town entirely separate from fortune city, it still offered a streamlined version of the core Dead Rising experience – a sandbox packed with improvised weapons, hundreds of zombies, and scattered survivors to save within a set time limit. Players got a cheap taste of the full game without spoiling anything, and their stats carried over to reward the investment of their time and money. It’s impossible to say exactly how Case Zero impacted Dead Rising 2 in terms of sales, but I can testify that it’s what sold me on buying the full game.

I’m not going to argue that every game should sell itself vertical slice demos. There’s obviously a lot of cost involved in giving away a standalone product, and not every game lends itself to this sort of distillation. However, both Dead Rising and The Stanley Parable went the extra mile with their demos and garnered excellent sales. The same seems to be holding true of Bravely Default. Developers capable of building a short standalone scenario should definitely consider it when it comes time to market their games.

Minecraft Dungeons is a hack & slash action-RPG in the vein of Diablo where you take a character, beat on monsters, find better gear, and use the new toys to beat on bigger and tougher monsters. The paper-thin plot is that an outcast villager was corrupted by an evil orb of power and down came the smiting, and only a hero etc etc etc. The story is "hit monsters, get loot, search out secrets," which really is all this genre needs.

Over the past few weeks I’ve spent a frankly irresponsible amount of time on my 3DS, a great deal of it with A Link Between Worlds . But when I wasn’t busy rescuing princesses from other princesses (or, uh, doing actual work for the site) I was delving into Bravely Default . Not just the full game, but the demo. Most of us have, at one point or another, obsessively played a demo for a game that had us hyped, but what may surprise you is that I’ve sunk over 10 hours into a single playthrough of this one. Any way you slice it, that’s a lot of content for free software. Well, I say "any way," but it comes pre-sliced, vertically.

The brilliance of Portal 2's multiplayer is not in the way it expands Portal's dynamics by incorporating an additional player and Mojang Snapshot Feedback an extra pair of portals to play with, but rather how it's designed for and around the more organic qualities of the basic multiplayer experience. For example, even though the game requires intense communication, recognizing that many gamers do not have and don't want to use a microphone, it incorporates a very effective, yet basic, non-verbal communication system. There's also the way that it seems to know that you're going to be spending a lot of time trapping your friends in portals, and encourages that playfulness by taking some of the things you learn in doing so, and making them solutions to the more complicated puzzles.


Ultimately, Minecraft Legends is more likely to satisfy fans of the original title who want to spend more time in this universe than die-hard strategy fans. The spin-off also retains some crafting and building mechanics, although they are not as deep as in Minecraft ​​​​​

It wasn't meant to last though, as even though the 32/64 bit era only barely blurred the party lines, with every subsequent gaming generation, it became harder and harder to separate one system from another just by looking at the games on the store shelves. By the time that Peter Moore revealed a "GTA IV" tattoo on his arm at E3, the message was clear that Triple A titles had become too big and too expensive to only commit to one system or another and, outside of some in-house and privately published development teams, the idea of big name exclusives was a dying light in the night drowned out by the dawn of a new day.

In a way its reminiscent of the film industry in the '90s, when guys like Quentin Tarantino were causing as much buzz as names like Steven Spielberg, and for a fraction of the cost. It was a time when film studios were snatching up every indie film they could get, while others like Miramax were becoming among the most successful around for being known as the home of daring new independent films that not only excited audiences with their infinite artistic possibilities, but equally thrilled their producers with insane profit margins.

However, there is a big difference between making an old school game for the purposes of invoking nostalgia, and making one that actually recreates the feeling of playing that game back in its prime. Castle Crashers is an example of latter, as it rightfully focuses less on re-inventing the brawler wheel, and more on emphasizing what made it so much fun in the first place. Of course, the little unique touches such as mini-games and RPG-lite elements are certainly unique and well appreciated additions.
