I saved the best for last on this list. While many folks pointed out Nintendo’s lack of original titles, Splatoon made a splatastic debut and made up for the last few decades. The cute, colorful, simple online shooter is a friendly way to introduce players to the genre. Clever weapon designs and fresh gear to wear makes Splatoon a uniquely designed game. It’s not serious or violent like many others, which appeals to players of all ages. Friends, parents, kids and squids can all enjoy this game t...

Another strategy game I played on my list is SteamWorld Heist and it’s a winner for me. Understanding the gameplay is simple and the story jumped right into the action. Exploring randomly generated ships and shooting it out with robots makes every stop along the way a true challenge. The old west aesthetic and steam-powered environment in SteamWorld Heist is pulled off much better than Wild Wild West. It’s almost the complete opposite of SteamWorld Dig but you could say SteamWorld Heist is a mor...

A favorite to win this year's Phase 2 Western Clash, HeroesHearth Esports has been dominant this season as one of two undefeated teams. Additionally, they have only lost three of the 21 games they've played so far. The team has really made a name for themselves, even though they were drafted from the Open Division just last y Other developers try downloadable content. To combat profit loss from piracy, developers continue to work on a game after its release and provide extra content to those who...

This isn't as much a critique of Legend of Solgard as it is the mid-core genre. Living in a time where smartphones outnumber the people who grew up playing video games, mid-core titles look to tighten the gap between those who play games and those who consider themselves gamers. And while that effort is valiant on its own merits, it seems odd that the entire mid-core brand is designed around making simple games more complicated, or rather, complicated games more simple. In a world filled with di...

The aforementioned Justice League two-parter is pretty much set in stone, even if its tone may change to suit what audiences seem to be after. The groundwork has been laid, including cameos; we’ve seen every one of the current six founding members on-screen. Bruce Wayne now knows (thanks to a nightmare vision of the future and a visit from the Flash) that he has to gather a group of super-powered types for a vague upcoming threat. Plus, the movie was subtitled Dawn of Justice , and featured the ...

"Ah yes, Tempest Janna. I had just gotten back from Supercon down in Miami… over 4th of July weekend… wearing the demon hunter cosplay. I’m pretty sure I nearly died that weekend, parts are hazy. Putting traumatic repressed memories aside momentarily, many things occurred to me that weekend. For example, as character who spent some time in the netherworld fighting fiery demons, the demon hunter had surprisingly not been a choice bit of attire to brave the Miami summer. I had decided to start a n...

I admit that Dota 2 has the benefit of an established fan base unmatched by almost any free-to-play game (League of Legends excluded). Not many games have fans who are willing to pay for something that doesn't benefit them in any way. Taking that into account, though, there still is no good excuse for free-to-play micro-transactions that benefit the company more than the player. Honestly, the solution is just to make your game cost money. Remember that? When games cost a flat fee for the entire ...

On the bright side, Renée has established herself as a competent member of the shared universe cast already, and the same can be said for her new Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) , who manages to grab a few genuine, charming laughs in his brief time on screen. Sure, the costume and flying effects may seem a little too close to Smallville 's style than superhero movie fans will like, but... you work with what you're given (a flying man in a bird mask is a hard sell no matter wh The TV universe has taken ...

On a slightly cheerier note, Galactic Cafe's funny and cerebral indie title The Stanley Parable also scored four nominations, as did the dystopian bureaucracy simulator Papers, Please , which is up for a Best Game award. Other nominees for Best Game include Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Super Mario 3D World . Tomb Raider has three nominations, as does mobile title BADLAND and Beyond: Two Sou Although I'm sure everyone wanted to see Cho'gall get picked again and it seemed like they were goi...

But after a few rounds of revision, the big thing we found is that anything that was clever and strategic fit him really well. Like "Healing Potion" right out of the gate stuck; part of that was the fact that as Deckard, I can be clever and put the healing potions down in advance where my allies are going to need the healing; I can maybe cluster healing potions in one spot or spread them out; I could put healing potions in multiple lanes at once and support allies all over the place. You really ...
